Four Seasons Resort

For a Mexico luxury holiday where authentic experiences abound look no further than this exclusive Four Seasons’ resort in the Riviera Nayarit.

Set in 52 acres of Central American scenic beauty, the resort has recently completed a huge renovation project which has seen significant updates and redesign to its many amenities and accommodation options.

In true Four Seasons style the service is exceptional; expect thoughtful, personal details and Mexican-style hospitality where guests are treated like family.

And whether you’re visiting to simply ‘fly and flop’ on the beach or by the pool, or to experience the numerous activities at your fingertips – golf and surfing to name a few – every guest benefits from the world-class fine dining choices at the four al fresco restaurants with epic sunset views.

So for families seeking fun on the Lazy River; honeymooners looking for romantic winter sun; or travellers with a desire to experience authenticity delivered with a hefty dose of luxury, Travel Seen recommends Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita.

Options for accommodation come in the form of 177 casita-style guestrooms, 31 suites and 32 residences and villas for extra space.

Designed in low-rise Mexican-style houses, the accommodation has a homely feel reflective of local culture, with all those Four Seasons details you’d expect from the 5-star group; like branded coffee makers, air conditioning, oversized bathrooms, signature toiletries and pillow menus. And each has its own outdoor space too in the form of a balcony or terrace with views of the beach, gardens, ocean or islands.

A selection of suites and villas have their own pool while the Two-Bedroom Bunk Bed Family Casitas are ideally set amid the child-friendly amenities for families.

The four exemplary restaurants at the resort are headed up by executive chef Jorge Gonzalez who weaves Mexican specialities and flavours through the menus of the al fresco eateries.

Aramara offers Asian cuisine but through the use of local ingredients; Bahia by Richard Sandoval boasts seafood and meats in a beachside setting that’s popular with families; slick Dos Catrinas Restaurant is a true taste of Mexico, with the bar here one of the best places at the resort to catch the sunset; healthy eating including plant-based dishes are on the menu at Tamai; or fuel up before a round on the course at the Tail of the Whale Clubhouse.

Don’t miss the fire each evening at the Shack Bar, or catch a game at Nuna Bar with a tequila-based cocktail.

Located in the northern area of the Bay of Banderas, the resort is a 45 minute transfer from the international airport at Puerto Vallarta.

Set within 400 acres of natural reserve on its own private peninsular overlooking the bay, the resort has plenty to explore on site; two secluded beaches, two golf courses and surf lessons on the Pacific waves to name a few.

Nearby you can take a hike up Cerro del Mono (Monkey Hill) for tropical paths and views of the bay; Lo de Perla Jungle Gardens is the place to go for nature-lovers with its orchid-filled rainforest trails, just 45 minutes from the resort; or ask concierge about transfers to La Cruz Sunday Market to pick up souvenirs and locally created artworks and prints.

Why here?

Three pools and two secluded beaches totalling 2 km mean you won’t be competing for a spot to sunbathe and swim under the Mexican sun. The Tamai pool is for adults only, younger guests love floating down the Lazy River, while all can kick back and relax at the Nuna infinity-edge pool. Complimentary watersports and paid-for activities – such as a trip on the Four Seasons Explorer yacht – are available from the resort.

The spa at Four Seasons Punta Mita is other-worldly... think treatments using tequila and cactus (yes really!), ‘sound healing’ in the meditation room and hydrotherapy including whirlpools, steam and sauna rooms, and plunge pools.

The two world-class golf courses, which were designed by Jack Nicklaus, are renowned for the “Tail of the Whale” 3-B hole - the world’s only natural island green.  There’s also a pro shop, lessons, driving range and putting green.

Ten courts, a pro shop and a schedule of lessons and clinics are available at the Tennis Centre.

Efforts to give guests an authentic experience mean the schedule of events at the resort include everything from bead-making to piñata parties, chocolate creating to tequila tasting.

Four Seasons Punta Mita has much to recommend it for families seeking a holiday in Mexico, including kids’ menus in the restaurants, in-room amenities for younger guests, babysitting services, a games room and teen area, and the Kids For All Seasons programme.

Our take

Ever met a blue-footed boobie on an uninhabited island? Thought not. That's a story to bring home from a stay at Four Seasons Punta Mita though, where the resort’s private yacht will take you on a journey to the Marietas Islands. A highlight is the tunnel swim to Hidden Beach – a crater formed by a bomb.

One to tick off the bucket list is playing the Tail of the Whale hole on the resort’s golf course, only open at low tide. Course designer Jack Nicklaus’ favourite hole is the world’s only natural island green.
