10 Reasons to Stay at Salt of Palmar

Travel Seen takes a look around one of the hottest properties in luxury travel right now, the unique Salt of Palmar on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius

For serious holiday wow factor, look no further than the unique, luxurious Salt of Palmar on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius.

Its signature take on responsible travel has got journalists talking. And at Travel Seen we knew it had to feature in our carefully curated portfolio of hotels and resorts the moment we set eyes on it. Why? Read on...

1. Bang On Beach Rooms

There are a number of room types to pick from but our favourite has to be the 28 Bang On Beach rooms. You’ll be hard pushed to find a better view, as these rooms are above the hotel’s beach and face east; making them a dreamy spot to watch the sunrise with a cup of locally sourced coffee.

2. Rooftop Bar

Overlooking the Indian Ocean, The Rooftop Bar is an epic spot for a cocktail or two. Head there before dinner for a ‘No Smoke Without Fire’ (inspired by the burning sugar cane fields during the Mauritian harvest), or a ‘Midnight Moon’ (featuring Ylang Ylang essence). The descriptions in the bar menu make for great reading while you sip.

3. East Coast Location

Mauritius is an exceptionally beautiful island for a luxury holiday, offering so much more than just sun, sea and sand. And Salt actively encourages guests to embrace the location, championing the island in every detail and inspiring its visitors to get out and explore the many wonders on the hotel’s doorstep.

On the east of the island, south of Belle Mare, Palmar enjoys clear waters and those white sand beaches synonymous with Mauritius.

4. Camille Walala Design

The design of the hotel makes a real impression. Designer Camille Walala was inspired by the island’s colours, so think hues of blue, splashes of pink and green, sunshine yellow and bold contrasts.

“Colours that evoke happiness” was what she had in mind. And as with everything at the hotel, local makers and creators have provided the finer details; the art, furniture and upholstery.

5. Adult-Only Mauritius Hotel

Salt of Palmar is an adults-only hotel, so guests can expect a grown-up feel. This makes it a favourite spot for a Mauritius honeymoon, with the all-inclusive package a great option to allow newlyweds to really indulge.

6. Locally Sourced

The Salt ethos is to put ‘local’ at the heart of the hotel. “We put homegrown and homemade at the centre of everything because it’s better for everyone”, they say. Not only because it’s good for sustainability, but also because it celebrates authenticity.

In practice that means that whatever is needed for the hotel is sourced from as nearby as possible. Whether it’s toiletries or butter, music or rum; everything you see at Salt of Palmar has been brought in from within a few miles of the hotel.

7. Salt Experiences

Visitors to the hotel are inspired and encouraged to really experience Mauritius during their stay. Collectable Experiences have been created to give guests itineraries focusing on everything from culture to vanilla!

And there are masterclasses put on at the hotel too, where a chef or mixologist will guide guests through the making of a dish or cocktail.

8. Sustainable Ethos

One of our favourite things about Salt of Palmar is its genuine efforts to support sustainability. It’s not all talk...

“Making a positive impact is not as easy as making a negative one, but it’s worth the extra effort. You will never find a single use plastic product at SALT. Refillables, yes, but straws, coffee cup lids, and tiny toiletries, no. We boost economies by employing, sourcing and collaborating locally. It celebrates culture and it makes for smiles. We keep it simple. That’s luxury in our book. All about inspiration, adventure and positive impact.”

9. This is Mauritius

One of the many unique features at the hotel is that guests are given a Salt of Palmar guidebook, This Is Mauritius. Written by local people, it uncovers Mauritius’ hidden gems, with ideas to go off the well-trodden tourist trail and truly experience authentic Mauritius.

10. Find Your Equilibrium

SALT Equilibrium is the hotel’s spa experience and home to the island’s first ‘room made of salt’. There’s four treatment rooms too and a Hydrolounge.

Elsewhere the Equilibrium energy is encouraged; like the yoga mat in each room, the raw, plant-based dishes in the restaurant and the mindful meditation app offered to guests.
